About The Designer
Taf Lebel Schaefer joined Steuben in 1998 as a designer of stylized yet remarkably expressive animals. A sculptor inspired by childhood memories of Cape Cod where she developed her lifelong love of nature and animal life, Schaefer graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design. Schaefer sculpts in many materials including hand-carved wood and stone and cast bronze, often combining different materials to capture the essence of an animal by abstracting its essential form. Her focus on the sculptural aspects of form brings a new dimension to the design language of Steuben glass. Schaefer's work in crystal is especially appreciated for its eloquence in conveying movement, tension, and tranquility in stylized animal forms that tug at the heart and capture every nuance of changing light.
